Heartburn is a fairly common problem. And, at times they can cause a
lot of discomfort too. Dr. Krishna Tripurenani is a consultant
gastroenterologist who guides us through a few things that we can do at home to
control this discomfort.
Heartburns occur because the acid in the stomach is pushed back into
our food swallowing passage. The key is to neutralize this acid. Try the
following if visiting a doctor is not possible :
- Many advocate milk, but according to Dr. Tripurenani, milk is known to increase the problem. Instead, buttermilk is a very good option to have.
- Chewing a sugar-free gum is helpful as it increases the salivary secretion, which can neutralize the acids.
- Baking soda can be used as a drink to cure a mild heartburn. Use one teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.
- Bananas can help to decrease the severity of heartburns. Eating bananas is probably the easiest thing to try among all the remedies.
- Gingerroot is known to decrease the symptoms. Adding gingerroot to tea can be a good idea, according to Dr. Tripurenani.
- Eating almonds can help in heartburns. Almonds should be chewed for quite some time so that their ingredients are released & go to the stomach & neutralize the acidity.
- Cutting down on smoking & drinking not only decreases heartburns, but have many other advantages. These are the biggest enemies of your health according to Dr. Tripurenani.
- A regular exercise can help by keeping your weight controlled. Obesity is a known risk factor for heartburns.
- Avoid foods that are known to trigger acid reflux. These include lemons, tomatoes, chocolates, fats, carbonated drinks.
- Have good eating habits. Eat slowly & chew the food well. This helps proper digestion by allowing time for food to pass.
- Avoid sleeping within 2 hours after food. It increases heartburns.
- Sleeping with the head & upper body slightly elevated can help to decrease the acidic reflux & thus reduce the severity of heartburns.
- Last but the most important: Avoid too much stress. Give yourself some time to relax.
If yet the symptoms are not relieved, consulting your doctor is
important, to know the cause according to Dr. Tripurenani.
